Why Mice Keep Coming Back After You've Set Traps

Traps remove the mice inside today but not the gap they used. Here's why rodent exclusion is the part that makes mouse control actually hold.

Trapping treats the symptom

A trap does exactly one thing: it removes an individual rodent that is already inside. It does not change anything about your house. The gap in the siding, the gap under the garage door, the utility penetration that was never sealed — all still open.

So the population refills. People read this as the traps not working, when in fact the traps worked fine and the building never stopped being accessible.

A mouse needs less space than you think

A house mouse can pass through an opening about the size of a dime. A young rat needs roughly a quarter. Neither has to make the hole — they will use dryer vents, gaps around pipe penetrations, worn weatherstripping, the corner where siding meets foundation, and the space under a garage door.

This is why walking the exterior matters more than anything happening inside. The interior tells you that you have rodents. The exterior tells you why.

Exclusion is the fix

Exclusion means sealing those openings with material rodents cannot get through — not expanding foam, which they chew straight out of. Done properly it is the difference between rodent control that lasts a season and rodent control that lasts.

It also has to happen in the right order. Sealing a structure with rodents still active inside creates a different problem, so removal comes first, then sealing, then confirmation that activity has stopped.

The seasonal pattern

Most rodent calls cluster in fall, when dropping temperatures push mice toward warm structures. If you have had mice for three winters running, you almost certainly have an unsealed entry that reopens the same pathway every year.

Fall exclusion is the highest-value work in cold climates for exactly this reason: anything that gets in before the freeze stays until spring.
